LIVE: Voting underway in NA for PM Khan seeking vote of confidence

ISLAMABAD: The lawmakers currently voting in the National Assembly (NA) session called for Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan to seek a vote of confidence, ARY News reported on Saturday.

The session has started with a recitation from the Holy Quran and the national anthem.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi presented the resolution asking for a vote of confidence from the lawmakers in the lower house of the Parliament.

The resolution states: ” This House reposes confidence in the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mr. Imran Khan, as required under clause (7) of Article 91 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.”

Later, Speaker NA Asad Qaiser read out the resolution. He asked those who want to vote for the resolution to move towards the right side of the Lobby.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan is present in the house, while the PTI members and allied members are also in attendance in NA session. The opposition has boycotted the session.

According to sources, the ruling coalition has 180 votes in the 341 members National Assembly while the opposition alliance has 160 votes. The Prime Minister will have to get 171 votes.

In a bid to win a vote of confidence from the National Assembly, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed all the MNAs of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to ensure their timely presence in the House on Saturday (today).

In a letter to the PTI’s MNAs as the party chairman, PM Imran said, “You are required to take part in the voting on a resolution for a vote of confidence in the prime minister as per the direction of the party.”

The prime minister warned that action will be taken against the absentee MNAs under Article 63-A of the Constitution.

Imran Khan second PM in country’s history seeking vote of confidence 

Imran Khan is the second Prime Minister in the history of Pakistan who is seeking vote of confidence from the National Assembly.

Prior to PM Khan, Nawaz Sharif had sought a voluntary vote of confidence from the Parliament after his reinstatement was granted by the Supreme Court in 1993.
